Jennifer Becknell is the new face in Antrim Township, where she was hired as secretary/treasurer in April.Age: 44Family: Husband of 23 years and two sonsEducation: Landau University, bachelor’s degree in business administrationFrom: Born in Fresno, Calif., moved to Greencastle from Irmo, S.C.Occupation: Antrim Township secretary/treasurer Hobbies: Decorating, entertaining, old movies, fishing (deep sea fishing is my favorite), college football (Go S.C. Gamecocks) and introducing my friends here to Southern style foods (such as: boiled peanuts, grits and mustard BBQ).Please explain your position as secretary/treasurer for Antrim Township. What is a normal day like? My role here as secretary is to provide support to the board of supervisors, the governing body of the township. I attend all board meetings and take minutes to record all decisions made of the supervisors. My role here as treasurer is to oversee the financial functions of the township. These duties include bank deposits, reconciling our bank accounts, accounts payable, accounts receivable/billing, human resources, budgeting, all insurances and payroll. We also have quite a few reports due to different governing agencies during the year. Likewise, because we are a municipality, we are subject to various audits throughout a year. As I am told, there is no normal day in local government. What sparked your interest in this position? Since 1989 I have always worked in the private sector as an accountant or human resource associate. My father was a military man. He spent his whole life working for both the federal and state government at S.C. Air National Guard. I always felt he contributed to the good of the people. When I saw the vacancy listed here at Antrim Township and I met the qualifications, I thought I would like to experience what it would be like to serve the public. What has been the most rewarding experience with your position? This may sound corny, but I have thoroughly enjoyed learning what it takes to keep water and sewer flowing for our customers. Learning how the process all works has been exciting. The staff we have here at Antrim Township is outstanding. They are not only exceptional in the knowledge of their fields, but as individuals also. It is rewarding to be among them all. What have been some of the challenges you have faced with recently starting this position? It would be safe to say I haven’t hit my challenges yet, as I am still in training mode. But if I had to pick something I found difficult, it would have to be taking minutes of the board of supervisors meetings. They talk fast during these meetings and I had to recognize their voices to names, as to be able to write my notes while my head was down. What is one fun fact about you? Once on a fishing trip off the coast of Charleston, S.C., I won the fishing pool prize money for the biggest bottom fish caught that day among 40 people. It was a 56-pound Amber Jack.
